Hey, It's Not Fall

First of all, I'd like to note that there's almost a week left to the summer, so those of you awaiting a fall rally should remain calm. Having said that, this week's results are exactly what I warned about last Friday. ("One bad week alone could undue the past three weeks of advances.")

After starting on an up note, most Internet stocks are down in September thanks to this week's pummeling, which saw all 13 sectors lose ground. Investors appear to be nervous about Q3 earnings reports after several companies said they may miss projections. There's an irony here: The often myopic market, so given to fixating on daily and even hourly trends, is freaking out about reports that for the most part aren't due for another month.

*Market Cap figure is in millions unless otherwise noted.

This sector has shown the ability to bounce back in the past month, with nearly half of its members gaining at least 30% in that time. Leading this week are the two wireless device competitors, Handspring and Palm. Both notch double-digit gains despite skeptical comments from some industry analysts regarding how big and how soon the market for wireless handheld devices will grow. Meanwhile, PALM announces a $50 million fund to invest in wireless start-ups. Ireland-based mobile wireless software developer Parthus Technologies retains the top monthly mark here despite losing 11%.

Very little movement from this group for the week, with even the leaders just treading water. Pay-for-placement search service GoTo.com gets a boost from news that it will pay AOL $50 million in return for having its search listings featured by the portal/access giant. GOTO's gains evaporated, though, after investors realized this was less a shrewd deal than a desperate move by a company short on cash and deep in debt. The good news for Ask Jeeves is that it leads the sector for the month with a 42% gain. The bad news is that it remains the biggest YTD loser in the group, down 77%.

Online adventure sport content provider Quokka Sports rises to the top on a wave of interest in its coverage of the Olympics. And it just misses qualifying for a medal, finishing fourth among all 'Net tickers. But the company faces a serious cash crunch and is trying to negotiate $50 million in debt financing. Stay tuned. Home improvement services site ImproveNet barely misses making the list of top 10 gainers after unveiling partnerships with similar sites in Australia and the United Kingdom. MP3.com and drkoop.com vie for the basement.

From the Buy On the Rumor, Sell On the News Dept.: Fatbrain grabs the sector lead on rumors that it is being purchased. On Thursday, shares dropped 10% after it was announced that Barnes & Noble.com would buy the online seller of professional and technical books for $64 million, or $4.25 per share. FATB shares closed Thursday at $3.94. BNBN climbs 4% on the deal. Beyond.com was staring at a 36% loss for the week until it announced Wednesday that it would retain its Nasdaq listing, sending it up 44% in one day. The joy was short-lived, however; BYND dropped 14% on Thursday. Quick quiz: What music-related site fell more than 40% this week? Nope, not MP3.com. It's musicmaker.com, which saw former CEO Robert Bernardi resign his position as chairman of the board on Monday. The company announced on Thursday a one for 10 reverse stock split, which I'm pretty sure is the name of a play run by the St. Louis Rams in last year's Super Bowl.

Ameritrade remains the only member of this group within shouting distance of a YTD gain, despite trailing E*Trade Group in market share. It must be the Stuart factor. Lending Tree rebounds from second-lowest all-time closing price of $4.91 on Sept. 7. E Com Ventures reports Q2 net profit of $939,000, but exclude the $5.5 million gain on the sale of shares in affiliate Envision Development Corp., and we're looking at a loss. At least that's how the market sees it, for ECMV finishes at the bottom this week.

You know it's a bad week when a sector places five stocks on the list of 10 biggest gainers, yet finishes in the red. Customer win boosts XCare.net to the top position among all 'Net stocks this week. The company announced that Advica Health Resources would use its e-commerce software for its network of provider organization clients. Corillian, a maker of banking and finance e-commerce software, soars in wake of a pair of new customer wins. Digital online music distribution agreement between Warner Music and RealNetworks benefits Preview Systems, which will provide retail integration for the new service.

Lots of new blood in this group, with 18 companies having gone public this year. Five of them head this week's list, led by OTG Software, a provider of online storage management and access systems. OTGS advanced for five straight days beginning Sept. 2 before dropping for three consecutive days (and counting) through Thursday. Employee Internet usage monitoring software vendor Websense picks up a "strong buy" rating and 12-month price target of $30 per share by First Security Van Kasper.

Things get really ugly from here on out, with four of the remaining five sectors filling out the bottom slots this week. Savvis Communications, a provider of private Internet-based network systems and services, climbs after announcing it would build its own fiber-optic network. Insurance industry e-marketing services provider Vicinity lands a deal with Nationwide in which VCNT software will be used to help direct customers to an agent. Japanese e-mail services provider Crayfish sinks in response to stockholder class-action lawsuit alleging the company misrepresented its financial condition. CRFH shares closed at $132 on March 9, the day after the company went public; since then they're down 96%. This baby's been flatlining for almost three months.

Internet polling firm Harris Interactive rises on legal news: Microsoft settles a lawsuit filed by HPOL, which alleged that Microsoft and others were blocking access to its e-mail surveys. Now the Redmond giant will let the surveys go through its Hotmail service. Also, Harris drops lawsuits against other access providers, including AOL. This week's biggest loser across all sectors is NetCreations, which gets pounded after the company issued a revenue warning for Q3. The culprit? Declining spending on Internet advertising. Even some of the hardest-hit Internet companies have had some hope since this year's meltdown - a mini-rally here, a surge there. Not so for Engage Technologies, whose stock chart resembles a one-humped camel. Since the height of its hump ($92.50 on March 1), ENGA shares are down 89%. Even beleaguered parent company CMGI has fared better.

Digitas, which focuses on helping bricks 'n' mortar companies develop a Web presence, posts the second-best gain of all 'Net companies this week. Why? No idea; there are no catalysts to be seen, not even a press release from the company in more than a month. DGAS shares aren't even bouncing off a new low, though last Thursday's $12.38 close was its lowest in three months. Scient rides a forecast from William Blair & Co. that the company will beat Q3 earnings estimates by one cent. Xpedior and iXL Enterprises continue to pay for earnings warnings and, in iXL's case the departure of its CEO and a layoff of 10% of its workforce.

It may be, arguably, the most successful Internet sector this year, but for the week the infrastructure group is a cellar-dwellar. And leading the descent is fiber-optic network router vendor Avici Systems, which went public in late July with one of the year's most successful IPOs. But investors have since figured out that the company is losing money, has only two quarters of revenue behind it (for a total of $2.7 million) and is competing against giants such as Cisco Systems, Juniper Networks and Lucent Technologies. After bouncing off an all-time low of $7.06 on Aug. 24, Webcasting technology provider iBEAM Broadcasting mounted a nice two-week rally that peaked on Sept. 5. Now it's on the downside.

A deal to provide bandwidth to small-business customers of IBM caused DSL.net shares to double on Aug. 22, just a week after shares hit an all-time low closing price of $2.50. However, the euphoria was short-lived, and shares have been sliding down steadily since. Still, DSLN retains the top monthly gain in the group. Which probably doesn't mean much, since the No. 2 monthly gainer is Log On America, the Rhode Island-based ISP headed for the discount bin. Every stock in this group is down for the year, save one. And what an exception it is: IDT, which has more than doubled in price this year, giving it the fourth-best performance among all 'Net stocks this year. In late August, AT&T announced it would invest $75 million in IDT.
