Welcome Back Microsoft.com

For most of yesterday Microsoft customers worldwide were not able to access the company's sites via the domain name "microsoft.com". Access was available, however, via the company's IP address.

At first it was believed that the domain server problems were the result of an internal data center problem. However, later in the day there were indications that it could have very well been a Denial of Service attack

Redmond-based Microsoft, however, continues to assert its DNS outage Tuesday evening and most of Wednesday was due to an operational error, and not the result of any issue with the company's or third-party products nor the security of its networks.

In a statement issued by Microsoft Wednesday evening, the company reports that on Tuesday evening a Microsoft technician made a mistaken configuration change to the routers on the edge of Microsoft's Domain Name Server network which resulted in limited communication between DNS servers on the Internet and Microsoft's DNS servers. This limited communication caused many of Microsoft's sites to be unreachable via the domain name microsoft.com.

Earlier in the day on Wednesday, Microsoft spokesperson Adam Sohn told seattle.internet.com that the company's technicians were doing everything possible to fix the problem. At approximately 5 p.m. (PST), Microsoft finally was able to remove the changes to the router configuration. Its sites became available again later in the evening Wednesday and as of press time are up and running. Looks like Microsoft.com is back on track.
