Downloading Computer?

  • I;m planning on building a PC for downloading large files (100MB - 6GB) at the same time at different intervals with a speed cap of about 100kb/s (ISP: Comcast/Cable) per set of files dling at once. Most likely no more than 3 depending on size.

I plan on using 3GB of ram, a decent 2.4ghz or so processor, a decent motherbboard from MSI like a K9N SLI V2 or something. Network card, 1TB tower external, and a few other parts I have laying around.

This machine is fast enough I believe, what do you think? It will be running a linux distro, probably Gentoo.

Bandwidth is what I'm worried about, don't want my ISP angry or shutting me down. What should I do to avoid this?

I need to make sure I'm smart about this. I'm going to request my bro for help on that question as well. College graduate for network security and knows a lot about these things.

But for now, what do you think?

  • Computer specification has nothing to do with having a downloading computer. For all I know you could have a 5 year old comp and still be downloading at the same speeds. It's the question of how much do you want to download.

Sure enough your 1TB will be more than enough to download endlessly. With a system of 3GB RAM and 2.4Ghz processor, it will be great. Don't get discouraged about computer specs when looking for a computer that is intended to download only.

But if your planning to do other things besides download, it will be fine also. Just don't try to play any major new release games with insane graphics or your computer will suffer tremendously.
